Is anyone else here a liberal or progressive but not vehemently anti-gun ownership?

Things like that show that if you are going to live out in the country, you need to be ready to fend for yourself if need be. You can not rely on government services to always be there for you.

It seems like a lot of this country's political differences can be explained via this simple observation.

Another extremely insightful post on this article.

I've read some of this discussion. I want to read more before I say too much though. This is a valid observation though. It seems like now that half the world's population lives in cities, city-folk have somehow decided they are the pinnacle of society and that they automatically know what's best for everyone else. They actually probably decided that a long time ago, but they seem to be louder about it now.

I haven't read very far, but this one person wrote a lot but struck me as particularly dumb. The comment started out:

<quote>Because what history has shown us happens time and time again, when people take up arms against their own government you get war.</quote>

No duh... I think even people that advocate taking up arms against a tyrannical government realize that means war. Finally, this brilliant essay ended with this gem:

<quote>At best you'll lose your freedoms, at worst, you will see everyone around you be hurt or die because they're coming after you.</quote>

This person may not of been an American, but do people not remember that our country and probably almost every country on earth started with an armed rebellion against an oppressive and tyrannical government?

I think there should be a Consitutional amendment that requires every citizen to read the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence or have them read to them in their entirety, or they will lose their citizenship and be deported on July 5th.

While I'm at it, I think in addition to Downsize DC's Read the Bills act, there needs to be a Write the Bills act, that requires all bills introduced into Congress to be written by hand in their entirety. Just to be sure, the official law that goes on the books would be the hand-written version. Hopefully this would stop Congress from passing 1400 page bills every week. I'm not sure how they manage to write so much that quickly, let alone read it. Could you imagine if today's Congress were drafting the Bill of Rights?

Agreed. I bet they have a compiler; turn short readable bills into massive legalese assembly code. Who knows?

So we need Open Source Laws, instead of binary-only distributions?

(+ 1 |Open Source Law|)

Though then we'd have all sorts of trouble with licensing. ;)
