What do I said...
I just listened to all the stuff you posted up here. We really should get together and jam sometime. Unfortunately, I've been really busy the last couple weeks, and I'll be out of town most of next week visiting Indiana University.

You should send me your Garage Band files, it'd be fun to at least play around with new basslines, even if we don't get to jam together for a while.

Sounds like a plan. Most of the stuff I do's in Logic, but I can improv some stuff in Garage Band for pre-work, I guess. :)

That'll make it much easier to collaborate in general -- like the Postal Service (the band!).

Hmm. I should have put a real e-mail in this comment. I've actually got an account now though. Anyway, yeah I was thinking about the Postal Service also. Isn't one of them in London and the other in Seattle? I guess that's not unlike us at the moment...

Indeed! I'm telling you, we need to make an album. You might also want to take a look at http://www.popcuts.com/ - I've got one of the top songs on there now.

If I reply to this, does it automatically post the comment?

I've been playing around with Garage Band a decent amount recently. It's way fun. I've learned a couple things. One, I'm really bad at keeping time. I can do okay if I make a drum track first, but I can't do it with just the metronome. Two, I found I have a fondness for non-standard time signatures. I recorded one thing that turned out to be in 7/4, and another that was in 5/4. The 5/4 one sounded quite a bit better though.

Indeed it does!

Garage Band is the hotness. Also, I like the 5/4 and 7/8.

Nifty. I just checked out popcuts. It's a really cool idea, it'd be awesome if that kind of thing caught on more. Congrats on having the best selling song for right now!

Thanks! Why do you think services like that have such a hard time? I think it's the combined factor of not-free and not-pop.

I think the biggest problem is finding good music. I know it's cool to talk about how terrible the music produced by the big labels is, but the fact is, there's quite a bit of it that I enjoy. I'm sure there's music on indy sites like these that I'd enjoy too, but it seems like it's almost impossible to find amongst all the crappy music.

I listen to the radio a lot less than I used to (pretty much not at all anymore), so nowadays I tend to find new music mostly by word of mouth. Popcuts may do better here, because they give fans a financial incentive to spread music by word of mouth. Of course, word of mouth works fine already without a financial incentive.

I also think it's going to be hard for online stores that aren't iTunes and Amazon.com to work well. I'm not sure how many people are going to think "I want some music, I'll check Popcuts before I go find something on Amazon."

Ah, the middleman as filter concept. I think that's definitely a big part of it, too - 90% of everything, etc. Have I ever pointed you towards http://magnatune.com/ ?
Mar 06, 2009
I don't know if you've pointed me at it before, but I have seen it. The last time I looked at it I got bored before I found anything I cared to listen to. It looks like things may have improved though, so I should probably give it another look.

Good times. If you find anywhere else with good music, let me know.
